An Introduction to Finding Your Calling: A Tip on Finding Your Next Step

  • Posted on Dec 7, 2023

In this world, we are interconnected and interdependent. Each of us is special. What we do or don’t do impacts the rest of us, whether we see it firsthand or not.

We each come to the table of humanity with our own divine given gifts and strengths. These gifts and strengths are a part of us for a reason – the reason is our service (or ministry) to others. When we serve or minister to others, we are helping them. “Them” can be people, animals, or the earth, for example.

The essence of your Calling is a sacred paradox. It is a sacred paradox because when you follow your Call, it is never self-serving, yet it is the most fulfilling action(s) you will ever take in your life.

Our Calling is always about helping others. We are hard wired to feel good when we help others. We are spiritually enriched by the satisfaction inherent in following our Call.

The deep joy and peace we feel when following our Call is so mysteriously intense, that we may even risk our lives and livelihood to carry it out (i.e. Jesus, Jane Goodall , Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Joan of Arc, etc.).

Ready to take the next step? Ask yourself:

✔️ What is my Passion?

  • or in what way do I enjoy spending my free time the most?

✔️ What is my Authentic Vocation?

  • If earning a living from my passion or Calling doesn’t make sense, what career would I enjoy that leverages my strength and allows me to pursue my passion and live into my Calling?

✔️ What is my Calling?

  • or, what have I been Called/put on this earth to do?

✔️ What challenge/problem (in the world) would I like to solve?

Author JP Michel writes that, “The labor market isn’t driven by job titles. The labor market is driven by problems to solve.” I agree with his perspective that its more meaningful to think about what challenge would you like to solve instead of what job title you’d like to hold. Learn about his book, “The World Needs You“.

🛑 If you don’t know the answer to these, you can try to skip ahead to other stages, but you will find yourself floundering, insecure, self-sabotaging, and/or skeptical of yourself and your future 🛑

Give yourself the time and space to deeply discern and reflect on what your answers may be.

How long it takes you could depend on many factors such as if you have professional help or not, emotional baggage, or difficulty accepting your Truth when its revealed.

Again, time and space to reflect is essential. Journal or talk it through with yourself or someone else who can promise to be objective and not insert their subjective desires or hopes for you into your discernment journey.
