Ever felt like you’re not ready to take on a new challenge? ๐ค
I remember the first time a corporate client asked me to provide leadership coaching for their employee. With years of experience in career coaching and co-active coaching, a second masterโs degree in leadership studies under my belt, and after going through numerous leadership development programs as a participant or program manager, you’d think I’d be ready. But I was nervous! I had never combined my two pots of knowledge and experience into actual Leadership Coaching.
But guess what? I prepped like crazy and made the decision to focus my energy on doing my best instead of worrying about the worst case scenario. The result was that the sessions went smoother than I thought! Not only did the manager I was working with experience the transformation they were seeking, but so did I.
This experience taught me that growth happens when you start doing the things you havenโt done before. You can be qualified even if you donโt have the experience.
Having experience proves you can do something, but not having experience does not prove youโre incapable of being successful if you tried.
The more you trust in your foundation, the more confident you will be in synthesizing your different strengths, experiences, and knowledge into actionable ways you can serve and exceed expectations. With the majority of my career consulting clients being from historically marginalized groups, Iโve found that trusting their foundation can be more of a challenge for them than for others. They may be the first to attend college or earn a masters degree. Often their degree comes with more of a significant debt burden than their privileged counterparts. This impacts many things, including but not limited to confidence and constructive risk-taking.
Very few of us start at the top. Instead of focusing on what you donโt have, embrace what you do. Gratitude for what we already have energetically attracts abundance. Barriers may slow you down, but they donโt have to stop you. Donโt let fear keep you from deepening your skill set. When you do, you get into a vicious cycle that keeps you from growing which impacts your ability to perform, get promotions, and increase your salary. Then, on the backed we wonder why we can’t ‘get ahead’ at work and in life.
I see this most often in my career consulting clients who come to me after earning their second or third degree. They want help transitioning to a new career path, but are afraid to search for jobs that would allow them to fully leverage their latest degree. Instead, they often want to apply to the same types of jobs with similar salary rangers that they had before their latest degree. Their previous roles were familiar and comfortable, I get it. But why earn another degree if you’re not going to leverage it to propel deep change in your #careerwellness and financial freedom?
Sometimes this fear manifests in the roles we choose to apply to or in the possibility of letting others down if we don’t’ live up to our own hype. Ifย youโre worried about the outcome, practice on a friend or offer your service to a friendly organization you already have a relationship with such as your place of worship or the non-profit where you volunteer. What’s the one thing you’ve been hesitant to try in your career?
