In the world of #RemoteJobs and competitive markets, your resume isn’t the place to showcase every skill you’ve ever acquired. Less is MORE. In the past 20 years as a HR professional and career consultant, I’ve seen too many Jack or Jill-of-all-trades resumes that miss the mark.
Your resume should be a laser-focused missile, not a scattershot. HR and recruiters are inundated with applications. They scan, they skim, and they seek the needle in the haystack that fits their precise needs. Keep in mind the needs of federal employers are different from the private and nonprofit sectors. A federal resume can easily be five pages where one or two is more acceptable in other sectors. This is because for all intents and purposes when it comes to federal jobs – your resume is your first interview.
That aside, make sure your skills resonate with the job description. If you’re having a hard time with this, either you should reach out for some help or consider that the job may not be the best for you to apply to. Aligning your skills to the job should be smooth, not difficult. Then, highlight the transferable skills that matter. Keep it concise. A novel belongs on a bookshelf, not in your job application.
What about all your other amazing talents? Enter LinkedIn. Your LinkedIn profile is your career canvas. Paint the full picture with all the colors of your experience. Don’t make the mistake of applying to jobs without updating your LinkedIn profile first. Not doing so is like going on a date without showering or wearing your nice “date outfit”. Why would you a date with that person you’re into without looking your best? Employers will Google you and if you have a LinkedIn profile, it will pop up. Be ready.
Remember, clarity is key in communication. A video cover letter? That’s your chance to shine, to be seen, to be remembered. Leverage this, especially for remote job applications.
How do you laser focus your resume? Start by targeting the information on your resume towards one industry and one occupation at a time. Eventually, you can weave together a resume that incorporates more, but that’s often better reserved for those with over 10 years of work experience.
If you’re really struggling showcasing your diverse skillset, you might be a good candidate for a skills based or functional resume. Remember, the less focused your resume, the more difficult it is for the hiring folks to assess your background against their needs.
