๐ Ever feel like you’re on the sidelines of your own career, watching opportunities pass by? Shirley Chisholm’s words resonate: “You don’t make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas.”
In the realms of human resources and career coaching, I see this scenario unfold daily. Leaders and team members alike recognize issues but often get stuck in a cycle of complaints rather than action. It’s a common workplace drama, but the solution can be difficult.
๐ How do we pivot from passive observers to proactive change-maker?
1๏ธโฃ Acknowledge the Issues: Start by validating the concerns. It’s okay to identify what’s not working, but don’t dwell there. What I like to do is gather all of the concerns and then categorize them.
2๏ธโฃ Brainstorm Solutions: Gather your team and brainstorm. Every voice matters, especially those from historically marginalized groups. Diversity in thought leads to innovative solutions. Keep in mind that those directly impacted, as well stakeholders should be invited. Beware of “About us, without us”.
3๏ธโฃ Create an Action Plan: Once you’ve landed on a potential solution, draft a clear action plan. Who will do what by when? My go-to reference is leveraging the SMART goals format.
4๏ธโฃ Implement with Accountability: Set the plan in motion and hold each other accountable. Progress is a group effort. This also includes leadership regularly communicating their support. What often gets lost during this phase is being deliberate about celebrating progress and incremental wins. Doing so is good for morale and keeping these priorities top of mind for the organization.
5๏ธโฃ Reflect and Adjust: After implementation, reflect on what’s working and what’s not. Be agile and willing to adjust. This is my favorite part! In the HR/OD world, we call this โAction Researchโ.
As a career consultant and leadership advisor, I’ve facilitated countless workshops and 1:1 sessions aimed at empowering folks to take charge of their circumstances. From out placement services, crafting standout resumes and cover letters to navigating the world of remote jobs, the key is always action.
๐ Remember, the changes we seek can benefit us all, but they require us to step up and move from complaint to commitment.
๐ฃ I’m curious, what’s one step you’ve taken recently to move from the sidelines to the field of action in your career? How are you shifting your energy from complaints to action or otherwise helping your staff make this shift?
