January is the time for opportunity!

Did you know that this is the perfect time to laser focus in on your #careerwellness? While most nonprofits tend to hire in the summer due to fiscal year, the rest of the world operates on a different timeline. That means right now, there are countless opportunities waiting for you in the hidden job market.

It’s time to update your resume, polish your LinkedIn profile, and get ready to seize the moment. The best part? Many of these opportunities will find you because of your network. That’s the power of connections!

As a career consultant and HR professional, I’ve seen firsthand how this time every year brings a surge of employers who are serious about bringing in new talent. Budgets are firm and there’s less procrastination. “Ghost jobs” fade away to make room for real, bona fide job openings.

But here’s the secret sauce: it’s not just about actively searching for a job. It’s about being open to the opportunities that come your way. Sometimes, the best career moves happen when we least expect them. So, keep your eyes and ears open, and be ready to say “yes” to the unexpected.

Here are a few tips to make the most of this opportune moment:

(1) Update your resume: Highlight your achievements, skills, and experiences that make you stand out. Tailor it to the specific roles you’re interested in. If you’re applying to remote jobs, consider creating a video cover letter to add to your application to boost your prospects.

(2) Polish your LinkedIn profile: Make sure your profile is up to date and showcases your expertise. A decent and professional headshot matters more than you think. Connect with professionals in your industry and engage with their content. Did you know LinkedIn has over 310 million users who are active at least once a month, but only 3 million of these are posting content? That means 1% of active users are posting. If you create post and engage with others who post, you will stand out.

(3) Network, network, network: Attend virtual events, join industry-specific groups, and reach out to professionals you admire. Building relationships is key to unlocking hidden opportunities. However, this past year I have seen many of my clients not engaging in deliberate networking. Instead, they are only reaching out to friends, family, and colleagues when they need something – which isn’t the best strategy. Just like you can make a Facebook friend out of a stranger you’ve never met, you can build relationships via LinkedIn with people you never met in-person. Don’t say you can’t do it on one platform when you do it all the time on another! Its possible. Step out of your comfort zone and move forward.

I anticipate things will slowdown in March, so take advantage of this time and put yourself out there. You never know what incredible opportunities and possibilities await you! Plus, being that this is the New Year, many of us are emotionally ready to start fresh and make commitments. Leverage this energy and mindset to support your career wellness.
