Leading Where We Are By Speaking Up

  • Posted on Nov 19, 2019

When we step out of our comfort zone, putting ourselves at risk at being the new target – all for the sake of speaking up against a wrong…it takes courage.

In the aftermath, when witnesses express their gratitude because “you said what they felt but were afraid to say it out loud”, that’s the universe making clear you did the right thing. Know that because of your example, others may have the courage to speak up themselves in the future. Know that because of your example, you may have saved countless others from being wronged.

We usually never know the exact numbers of our impact, and the numbers actually don’t matter. Because even if you’ve saved just one person from being wronged, it will matter to them. It could change their life.

When you call someone out for lack of kindness, even if they aren’t properly dealt with by the leaders in your organization – your actions still contribute to creating a healthy workplace atmosphere. Your actions will still help create a ripple effect and reinforce a norm of civility that everyone will benefit from. Your leaders may not recognize your courage and contribution for what it was, but your colleagues will. They will look up to you and appreciate you. You may become the leader they wish they had. This is what Leading Where You Are looks like.

We can run away from problems such as a toxic work environment, but we can’t run away from ourselves. Be the type of person you can live with. It’s painful to try and turn our values on and off because we’re at work versus at home. You deserve more peace than that.

Do the right thing. Never compromise compassion. When we are hurt or upset, it takes more courage and energy to be kind, then it does to be angry or hateful. Keep this in mind as you Lead Where You Are. Keep in mind what you already know, but is more comfortable to forget – That the easy way, is not always the right way. The right way, often looks more like a jungle rather than a cleared, trodden path.
