I attended a fascinating presentation, “The Executive Woman: Breaking Barriers & Building Legacies” in Washington DC this morning by three women who are executive leaders in their field.
It was great and I wanted to share some tidbits with you!
𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀:
❥ Relationship is the currency of networking. DC is a very transactional city. Some will ask “What do you do” even before asking your name. If it doesn’t seem like you can add value to them, they move on. Take networking a step further by not forgetting the human component. Even if you don’t see how someone could help you, that doesn’t mean they can’t. Plus, they may be able to assist someone you know and vice versa.
❥ As a leader, mentoring and helping others increases your own credibility and impact. It’s always a win-win.
❥ Ever leader, especial women leaders – has their “defining moments”. These are when they reject the silo or expectations of others to pursue their own path. Don’t let others’ expectations of you, limit you. Follow your calling and reject imposer syndrome. Some people are just projecting on you or intimidated by your power and competence.
❥ Each of us have some sort of privilege. Use your privilege for good!
❥ Sometimes taking risks with your career doesn’t pan out. That’s OK. Failure is on the path to success. Keep taking risks anyway and don’t stay down after getting knocked down.
❥ Lean into your creativity. If you have a creative idea, act on it as soon as possible. Creativity is an infinite resource that most people have. If you don’t act on your creative idea, someone else will have the same or similar idea later and they will act on it.
Warmly,
~ Ebony
