Looks like Iโ€™m not the only one.

At least twice in my career, I’ve walked away from what seemed like golden opportunities because they didn’t live up to the hype. And I’m not alone.

A study by Gallup revealed that the primary reason most employees leave their jobs is because of their direct supervisor. In fact, the Workforce Institute at UKG found that managers impact workers’ mental health more than both doctors and therapists!

In my experience, I’ve faced supervisors who dictated my professional development without my input and pressured me to provide special treatment to certain employees, against organizational policy. I’ve been denied promotions and training, and I’ve been made to feel that my work life would be difficult if I didn’t โ€˜get with the programโ€™.

But here’s the thing: sometimes, you’re ready for a job, but the organization isn’t ready for you. It’s like any relationship – you court each other, go all-in. Itโ€™s at that time where unsavory cultures or perspectives can come to light.

Organizations are not perfect and human beings are a work in progress. Even the most seasoned of supervisors or highest ranked organization will have growing edges.

So, what do you do? You take care of yourself. You give yourself grace. You leave situations where you’re not treated respectfully or are pressured to throw your ethics out the window.

Some situations are so complex that it’s healthier to leave than try to change it. It takes a tremendous amount of emotional labor to fight a good fight.

But the sooner you step away, the sooner you can hold space for renewal and healing. The sooner you shift energy towards the future instead of the painful present and past โ€“ the sooner you can #selfcare into a healthier situation.

Take the steps you need for your own well-being and professional growth. For me, I reflect on the fact that I’ve had many more wonderful workplace experiences and supportive supervisors, than not.
