Why You Need To Schedule Time In Your Calendar For Job Searching

  • Posted on Mar 6, 2024

I met with a client last week and they told me, “I don’t have enough time to look for a job.” I understood that this was their perspective, while also knowing that they always managed to make the time to meet with me during our schedule 1:1 sessions that lead up to the creation of their optimized resume and cover letters.  My client shared their struggle of juggling a full-time job, school, and family, which they felt left them with no time to search and apply for new opportunities.

Despite having a polished resume and cover letter we had worked on together, they were stuck in a rut, unable to get the results they had been hoping for. They started to believe that their new resume “wasn’t working anymore” and that perhaps they should reconsider the type of careers they were aiming towards.

The truth was that their resume was awesome and that the career we worked hard on discerning was aligned with their long-term goals, interests, and strengths. It seemed that it was easier to blame their resume and career goals instead of prioritizing time management.

Shifting into your dream career lifestyle is not easy, and yet it’s absolutely 100% rewarding and worth it. However, if it’s not watered, it won’t grow. You water the vibrant flowers of your future results by searching for and applying to opportunities, now. The time you dedicate is your water. Scheduling that time is when you gather the water and actually pour it into your garden.

My question was: 𝐻𝑜𝑤 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑏𝑒𝑒𝑛 𝑠𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑑𝑢𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑗𝑜𝑏 𝑠𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒?

Just as we schedule doctor’s appointments or parent-teacher meetings, we need to allocate specific time for job searching and application. It’s not something that can be squeezed in between other tasks. It requires dedicated focus and effort.

If you’re not seeing the results you desire, it’s time to reflect on your actions. Are you allocating enough time for your career progression? Are you under the impression you can just get it done in between everything else?

Nope! Probably won’t happen!

Remember, your next career move is a serious one. It could mean better flexibility, higher income, or more enjoyable work. It’s not just about you, but also about those you care for and who care about you.

Better flexibility, more money, more enjoyable work – whatever it is that’s driving you – use it to 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲. Think about how when everything is said and done – how it will positively impact those you’re taking care of and those who care about you.

Something urgent may come up one day, AND if job search and application is regularly scheduled in your calendar every day, you will eventually get to it. When it is not scheduled at all,  – it will be much harder to move forward.

So, schedule that time, beloveds! Your future self will thank you.
