Nex Benedict: Preventable Tragedies Need To Be Faced Head On

  • Posted on Feb 26, 2024

Unchecked hatred is not just a societal issue but a workplace problem. It’s disturbing how hate continues to claim innocent lives daily, irrespective of age. This is a preventable tragedy, and it’s time we address it head-on. Anti-transgender policy making, hateful rhetoric, and other forms of bullying need to stop.

Many of us (especially those of us in HR)  have been watching or experiencing firsthand how unchecked hatred, learned from a young age, can seep into the workplace. It’s a cycle that starts in the home and then gets nurtured in schools where children learn to harbor hatred or at best – ignorance of those different from themselves. If not addressed, they carry this into adulthood, affecting their professional lives.

The question we need to ask ourselves is, why are they learning to hate so hard and what can we do about it?

We have a responsibility to break this cycle. We need to create an environment that fosters understanding, empathy, and respect for diversity. We need to teach our children, our future workforce, the power of acceptance and the strength of our intercultural differences.

It’s time we take a stand against hate, not just in our society but in our workplaces too. It’s time we become the change we wish to see.

Here are three ways to start:

  • Be a safe harbor for a young person in your life. You don’t have to be a parent or educator to positively impact youth. In your usual interactions with them, take advantage of opportunities to share your thoughts on inclusion, equity, and compassion in an age-appropriate way.
  • Visit the American Library Association’s resources on how to fight book censorship https://www.ala.org/advocacy/bbooks/bannedbooksweek/ideasandresources/activity. Share this resource with others.
  • Education doesn’t stop after grade school. Advocate for and support special emphasis observances and identity groups at your workplace that promote inclusion and intercultural competency.

Do you have additional ideas on how we can end hate-based bullying? How else can we make our workplaces more inclusive and accepting? Please share! The sooner we start, the better.
